The
Lion Park was first established in November 1966. It
is neither a game reserve nor a zoo. It has been spilt into two
areas – one for the herbivores
and one for the carnivores.
The Lion Park’s
large herbivore species include
black wildebeest, springbok, blesbok, gemsbok, red hartebeest,
zebra and giraffe. Ostriches are also present. These animals can
also be viewed from the comfort of your own vehicle during a leisurely
game drive on the 10 km trail in the large antelope area.
There are currently
more than 100 lions at The Lion Park. This includes almost 30 hand-reared
cubs. Most of the lions are housed in four different lion camps where
numbers range to about 14 animals, including cubs of different ages.
One of the males is a rare white lion. The lions in the four camps can
be viewed from the comfort of your own vehicle and there are excellent
photographic opportunities. Lions can also be observed feeding during
feeding times in the camps.

The
African Lion:
Lions will hunt
and kill anything from the size of a Cape Buffalo, hippo, giraffe and
young elephant. They will even savage along with hyenas and vultures.
Lions are most active at night, but over 24 hour period they may be
active for just 2-4hours. The lionesses do most of the hunting.
Eight
different large African carnivore species, from lions and
hyenas to caracals, wild dogs and jackals, leopard, black leopard and
cheetah, can be seen at The Lion Park. All the carnivores are housed
in enclosures.
Hyenas
The spotted hyena is the most common
of Africa’s hyenas. Gregarious and social, they move in packs of up
to 50. The Lion Park is also home to the brown
hyenas, a species not often seen in the wild. Usually a loner
and a true omnivore and scavenger, it will also take anything from insects
to fruit.
Leopard
The largest spotted cat in Africa and without doubt one of its most
beautiful carnivores.

Black
Leopard
This is the same species as the leopard but with aberrant coat
coloration.
Cheetah
The fastest mammal on the earth, reaching speeds in excess of 100km/h.

Caracal
The largest of the small cats of Africa. They are solitary and
territorial, coming together to mate.
Wild
dog
The second most endangered carnivore in Africa. They hunt in packs
of 50 adults and pups, usually during the day.

Black-backed
Jackal
Frequently seen, particularly in the company of larger predators on
hunting expeditions. They are completely omnivore. Usually seen alone,
but lives with a mate.
